In this case, the person's immune system produces antibodies that destroy the cells that produce insulin. Because the body can't produce insulin on its own, daily insulin injections are required.

Type 2 (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes, because it normally appears in people aged over 40) is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for about 90% of cases. Genetic factors play a major role in the development of Type 2, but obesity is also a major factor. A typical Western lifestyle means a diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrates and a minimal exercise plan and these habits are strong risk factors. A third type of diabetes, known as Gestational Diabetes, affects women who have high blood-sugar levels during pregnancy. Is the Road to Diabetes and Depression the Same One?



For example, having type II diabetes might cause people to feel more depressed because they are sick. Many scientists, me included, feel that there are common lifestyle factors that lead to type II diabetes and depression at the same time. There are an abundance of studies implicating exercise (or lack of it) in the onset of both diseases. There are also many studies highlighting the role of nutrition in both diabetes and depression.

Now, a new study, published in the October 2007 edition of PLOS Biology, sheds more light on this relationship with a focus on insulin at the center. Anyone with diabetes is well versed in the importance of insulin. It is a primary hormone that controls blood sugar levels, which the body needs to maintain tight control over for survival.

Insulin has many jobs
Your pancreas releases insulin into your bloodstream whenever blood sugar levels rise. In type II diabetes two things go wrong. One, your pancreas becomes less responsive to making and releasing insulin; and two, cells throughout your body start to ignore the insulin that is released. Since insulin is important in so many different body functions, this becomes a serious problem.

The findings in the new study revolve around another role of insulin in the brain. The researchers discovered that dopamine activity in a part of the brain that promotes feelings of pleasure and reward are dependent upon insulin. In my opinion, this has a couple of far reaching implications.

Does insulin promote addiction?
The research suggests that diabetics, who lack the ability to produce insulin, will have a more difficult time feeling joy and pleasure because the brain circuits that control these feelings will be less active. This may be one link between the co-occurrences of type II diabetes and depression.

From a scientific perspective, this is a very interesting finding. But from a health perspective how does it help us prevent these diseases in the first place? The new research suggests that rises in insulin might boost the activity of pleasure and reward centers, the same ones that are stimulated by addictive drugs like amphetamine and cocaine.

When does your insulin go up? It goes up after a high sugar meal. It means that high sugar meals might stimulate addictive centers in the brain.

I've been touting the benefits of feeding yourself and your kids low-glycemic (essentially low sugar) meals for some time. This new research adds fuel to that argument by suggesting that sugar might actually be addictive. Maybe not in the same sense that elicit drugs are addictive, but that they have some degree of addictive tendencies themselves.

The irony is that eating high-glycemic meals actually makes you feel good in the short-term by increasing insulin and boosting activity of your brain's pleasure centers. But after years of eating sugar your pancreas will eventually burn out and lead to type II diabetes and possibly depression, leaving you with the opposite feelings that you ate the sugar for in the first place.

The take home message?
Get the high sugar cereals and other foods out of your house. Don't set yourself and your kids up for a lifetime of battling the cravings for these disease promoting foods.

The diabetes disease can be brought on by depression. Cortisol, a stress hormone can increase if you get depressed. This hormone can reduce insulin sensitivity. The Archives of Internal Medicine disclosed the following: In these three scenarios (single bouts of depression, chronic depression and depression that worsened over time) an increased risk of diabetes existed in all three cases when depression prevailed.

People sometimes ask, "what can I do if I get invited to a party".

The answer is simple, GO!! You can do all the things your friends do and go to all the same places. Once you know you have diabetes this is easy. You now have to manage it, if it is managed well you can even snack and eat some of the so called bad foods.

Say you are invited to or even want a birthday party for you or your child.

You can have the traditional party cake and then frost it with non-dairy whipped topping. Hamburger, pizzas, hot dogs all OK. Make sure there is activities planned as well during the party so that any extra carbs are used up and don't get the chance to become sugar in the blood.

If you are having canned fruit then stay away from fruit canned with syrup because the fruit will absorb some of the sugar in the syrup, this is because the syrup has the higher concentrate of sugar, higher than the fruit. You can't rinse this off neither as it is in the fruit. Go for fruit in natural juice but again make sure you read the label and this time you can drain or rinse the fruit juice off. I'm sure you know the bad things to look out for, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, lactose. What about stuff like sorghum, molasses, dextrin or invert sugar (that sounds OK), all a big no no, sugar, sugar, sugar. You can get diabetic canned fruit which won't have any extra sugar and will often be in water but not compulsory.

What about cookies I hear you ask, well again you can buy diabetic cookies and sugar free ones or you can bake your own to take to the party.
A couple of things to remember though. Diabetic may not mean sugar free, just that one or more of the ingredients have been changed. It could be salt free, have a sugar substitute. You may also find that just because something is sugar free it is not always lower in calories. If you are baking your own then you need to get a good diabetic cookbook that explains the nutritional makeup for their cookies.

Desserts, Well you do have to be extra careful as most desserts are full of sugar, if you can get some input to the party this will be easier to manage as you can take the route above, make you own but with the right ingredients. That same cookbook should help. Also the same applies, what does sugar free and diabetic really mean?

Enjoy the party, watch what you eat and get in involved in preparing as much as you can. Read the labels, understand what it all means and you will be OK. Gain as much knowledge as you can and this will assist you to make the right choices.

The Dangers of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes is a condition in which the body fails to produce extra insulin which is required by the body to regulate blood sugar levels amidst the hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy. This results to alarmingly high blood sugar levels for the pregnant mother. Glucose levels will revert back to normal after delivery but this does not mean that the condition is harmless. The abnormality may endanger both the mother and the infant during the entire 9 months of pregnancy and during delivery. But the most serious complications are the chances the infant will develop certain illnesses when he grows older.

Gestational Diabetes can make delivery extremely difficult and dangerous especially if the baby is quite large. It may require the mother to undergo cesarean delivery because too much glucose impedes the regeneration of cells that and necessary bodily changes required to give normal delivery. It also greatly enhances the risks of the mother developing hypertension after child birth. Hypertension is a serious illness that can prove to be fatal when left alone. It may result to seizures or sudden periods of unconsciousness. Seizures can be very dangerous especially if they occur in hazardous places or situations.

Gestational Diabetes can also endanger the health of the newborn baby. The baby may be born overweight and grow up obese. He may have metabolic problems and will find harder time to lose weight. He may also have low blood sugar levels which may lead to lack of energy and concentration. This will make his day to day life very difficult because he may not have enough energy to do the things he wants to do. Normal body functions such as digestion will also be impeded making abnormally fast weight gain a problem. Jaundice is another problem the baby may experience. It is the yellow pigmentation of the eyes and skin.

Gestational Diabetes can cause very huge problems in the present and the future but such can be avoided with very simple solutions such as proper diet and enough exercise. Almonds and Diabetes

It is estimated that 24 million people in the United States have diabetes. From that count there are a possible 6 million that have not yet been diagnosed. Recent research has found that adding almonds to diet can help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes which is the most prevalent type of this disease, accounting for up to 95% of all cases.

Diabetics either have an inability to use the hormone that allows glucose to be turned into energy or a decreased amount of insulin. When blood sugar levels are left uncontrolled, vital organs can be severely damaged. Studies have shown that one of the benefits of adding almonds to a diet is that the disease could actually be prevented.

During a study which was conducted at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, 65 adults with pre-diabetes, the condition where blood glucose levels are high but not enough to be diagnosed with the disease, found that eating an almond enriched diet dramatically improved their insulin sensitivity compared to the control group who ate no almonds.

Having pre-diabetes raises the risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and stroke. There are two tests and two different sets of numbers to determine whether one is a pre-diabetic. The IFG level is 100-125mg. IGT levels would be 140-199mg. IFG is an overnight fast while IGT is a two hour test.

The really good news is that there is a lot that can be done to delay and prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that a patient can lower their risk just by losing 7 percent of their body weight through physical activity and diet. Almonds are beneficial in both of these pursuits. This delicious and nutritious super food can also send bad cholesterol numbers falling and gives protection against cardiovascular disease while helping to prevent weight gain and obesity.

The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition published another study that following a diet that includes almonds not only lowers blood LDL level, but also lowers C-reactive protein levels, a key marker with the inflammation of blood vessels. This inflammation can lead to clogged arteries making the heart pump faster. The C-reactive proteins dropped 24 percent, an amount equal to the reduction achieved by taking statin drugs without the debilitating side effects.

A different study reported in the Journal of Nutrition found that after eating a meal with almonds, blood samples taken directly after the meal showed lower blood sugar and insulin levels and that the levels of protective antioxidants had increased. So not only are almonds beneficial to warding off diabetes, but they show anti-aging benefits as well.

Stress-Diabetes Connection- Is there any and what is the mechanism?

While there are several factors that contribute to the development of diabetes, stress is an important one.

This is how:

Type 2 Diabetes:

About 95% of diabetics suffer from Type 2 diabetes, which occurs due to a process in the body called insulin resistance. Stress is a major cause for insulin resistance. Obesity is another important culprit for insulin resistance. Stress Eating is the main underlying cause for obesity. In this way, stress significantly contributes to a person's obesity and risk for developing diabetes.

Insulin resistance is a process in the body which causes insulin, a chemical in your body, to be less effective in keeping your blood sugar normal. Consequently, your body produces more insulin in order to keep your blood sugar normal. This compensatory increase in the amount of insulin may control your blood sugar for a while, but it's harmful for the rest of the body. Large amounts of insulin can raise your blood pressure and increase your risk for cancer. Insulin resistance also increases your risk for heart attacks and strokes.

After many years of escalating insulin resistance, eventually your insulin producing cells in the pancreas get exhausted and cannot churn out the huge amounts of insulin. At this point, your blood sugar starts to rise and you end up being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes:

Type I diabetes is the other type of diabetes. It is much less common, accounting for about 5% of diabetics. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which your dysfunctional immune system starts to attack and kill your own insulin producing cells. The gentleman was a highly successful businessman who was struggling to keep his blood glucose levels down. Then he went on a vacation to his native homeland in a rural setting. When he came back from vacation, he came to see me. "Doc, you've been telling me about the effects of stress on diabetes. You are absolutely right. During my vacation, my blood glucose readings were perfect for the first time. Now that I'm back at work, my blood glucose levels are going up again." He was genuinely excited to see for himself the strong relationship between stress and high blood glucose levels.

Even subtle stress can elevate your blood glucose levels. For example, some diabetics get so preoccupied by their blood glucose readings that they stress themselves out. As a result, their blood glucose reading starts to escalate. Then they get more stressed out and a vicious cycle sets in.

I remember one lady who was always preoccupied with her blood glucose readings. During one visit, I told her to stop checking her blood glucose. Two months later, her diabetes was under better control, as evidenced by her blood test report from the laboratory. She was completely amazed.

These examples clearly demonstrate the negative impact of stress on diabetes.

The food we eat will be broken down into small pieces known as glucose and then it will be utilized by our cells by the help of insulin.
