Using The Power Of Food To Heal Type 2 Diabetes

In order to cure diabetes mellitus naturally, using food is one of the best ways to do so. Exercise is another way that can help to manage or cure diabetes. Not learning how to manage diabetes can lead to many of the unpleasant symptoms of diabetes. With the greater understanding of this chronic disease, there isn't a better time than now to arm yourself with the tools you need without feeling overwhelmed.

What Is Diabetes?

This disease is sometimes known as one of the "silent killers" because it takes a while before the symptoms of diabetes begin to show up especially with Type 2 diabetes. This condition results when the pancreas does not produce enough or any of the hormone insulin. Insulin is necessary to transfer glucose that is deposited in the bloodstream as a result of the body's normal digestive processes to the cells in the body that need this glucose to function and for daily activities.

When there is a deficiency in insulin, this glucose accumulates in the blood. A prolonged accumulation leads to the development of the various diabetes symptoms as well as diabetes related complications.

When the cells are starved of glucose, it can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and the more serious damage to the eyes leading to blindness, nerve damage that can require limb amputation, kidney disease, blood vessel damage, the immune system damage, etc. Some of the complications can be fatal when a patient falls into a coma.

The most serious type of diabetes is Type 1 diabetes which begins in childhood and requires daily injections of insulin because the body produces no insulin or too little for normal functioning. This type is less common that Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes usually begins in adulthood although younger and younger patients are being identified as a result of the explosion of Type 2 diabetes in the past decade or so mainly due to poor food choices and a lack of physical activity practiced by many. This type of diabetes results when the body does not produce enough insulin or the body becomes resistant to the insulin produced. It doesn't generally require insulin injections.

Diabetes Diet - Healing Through Food

There is a commonly held view that type 2 diabetes can not only be managed through diet but can also be prevented or reversed. Gone are the days when a diabetic had to suffer through a strict diet. Nowadays, diabetic diets vary from one sufferer to another and the diets are not usually restricted as long as a proper balance is maintained.

Glucose which is the simplest form of sugars and needed for energy or stored until needed results from the carbs that are consumed. Carbohydrates are either complex carbohydrates which are derived from such foods as rice, pasta, beans, etc, or simple carbohydrates that come from fruits, vegetables, cane sugar, honey, etc. With rice, pasta, flour, etc, the unrefined kind provides the necessary complex carbohydrates. The "white" kind is bereft of all nutrients.

Carbohydrate Counting

Diabetics are usually encouraged to eat more complex carbohydrates to help control this disease. For diabetics, it is usually recommended that about 50% of total daily calories be derived from carbs.

Since the treatment of diabetes tends to vary from one diabetic to another nowadays, a nutritionist or dietician will need to determine how many carbohydrates are required by the sufferer on daily basis. This information then helps a sufferer manage diabetes and the symptoms of diabetes through a process of carbohydrate counting which helps to manage blood sugar and is crucial for any diabetes diet.

This means that a diabetic can enjoy any food even the "bad" foods such as a candy bar as long as he or she knows how this one candy bar affects their daily required carbs amount through carb counting.

Fats

While most diabetics are encouraged to reduce the amount of fat consumed, for some other sufferers, they may actually be required to increase the fat intake in their diabetes diet. Your doctor will usually tell you which group you fall under. But even when a diabetic is required to eat more fat, this does not mean that food should be doused in fat, even the good fats such as those from olives or avocado.

Fiber

For any kind of disease, fiber is always very important as it helps the body properly and quickly eliminate waste as well as disease causing toxins from the body. There are two kinds of fiber which include insoluble fiber otherwise known as roughage which does not dissolve in water and usually helps to cure or prevent constipation.

The second kind of fiber is the soluble kind which is crucial for a diabetes diet as it helps to manage and stabilize blood sugar levels. Soluble fiber also helps the cells become more sensitive to insulin which results in more blood sugar being transferred to the cells from the blood stream which all works to prevent the symptoms of diabetes when the blood glucose levels remain constant without dipping or rising significantly. Eating more legumes, oat bran, oatmeal and fruits can help a diabetic increase the amount of soluble fiber in the body.

These are only a few aspects of a diabetes diet that can effectively manage or cure diabetes mellitus naturally while preventing the various symptoms of diabetes.
